Revelation 2:12-29

How to Get a Thumbs-Up from God

“To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.  I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.  Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.  Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

“To the angel of the church in Thyatira write:

These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.  I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.  I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.  So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.  I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’

To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations—  that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father.  I will also give that one the morning star.  Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

*******

Last week, we learned that the church in Ephesus was doing everything right, except they abandoned their love that they had.  Jesus relates to this church as the one that holds the seven stars and walks among the seven lampstands.  Jesus reminds them that without love, their lampstand will be taken away.  It is absolutely imperative that a church is doing things out of love.  You can’t witness to the world without it.  The reward for continuing in the love is the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

We also learned that the church in Smyrna was suffering persecution.  To those that are faithful even to death, Jesus will give the crown of life.  The church in many parts of the world are suffering persecution even very recently.  We need to have a vision for discipling more people to be real Christians in the world, and making a difference by loving other Christians and doing what is right.

Now for the church at Pergamum:

I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.”

Good things about the church in Pergamum:

  1. They remained true to Jesus’ name despite being in the midst of where Satan had his throne, spiritually.

  2. They did not renounce their faith in Jesus even though Antipas was put to death for his faith. The traditional account goes on to say Antipas was martyred during the reign of Nero (54-68), by burning in a brazen bull-shaped altar for casting out demons worshiped by the local population.()His witness to the Lord Jesus Christ by word and deed and miracles of healing began turning the people of Pergamum from offering sacrificial worship to idols that can neither see, nor hear, nor move, nor breathe. The pagan priests complained vehemently that he was misleading the people by causing them to commit apostasy from their faith in their ancestral gods by his personal example of moral and spiritual virtue, the firmness of his faith in his God, and his constant preaching about Jesus the Anointed One. When they demanded that he stop, he refused. He would not submit to their demand to stop preaching Christ and offer sacrifice to the idols. ()The enraged pagan priests dragged the Hieromartyr Antipas to the temple of Artemis and threw him into a red-hot copper bull, where usually they put the sacrifices to the idols. Artemis was a Huntress.Typically wild game was sacrificed to her. In the red-hot furnace the martyr prayed loudly to God, imploring Him to receive his soul and to strengthen the faith of the Christians. At night Christians took the body of the Hieromartyr Antipas, which was untouched by the fire. They buried him at Pergamum. The tomb of the hieromartyr became a font of miracles and of healings from various sicknesses. So, apparently Antipas continued to be a witness even after death.

Negative things about the Church in Pergamum:

  1. There are some people there that are similar to Balaam, teaching people to eat meat sacrificed to idols and take part in sexual immorality. Balaam is the prophet in the Old Testament that King Balak hired to curse the Israelites.Balaam was from Mesopotamia, but he still worshipped the Most High God.Although he tried 3 times, he could not curse the Israelites, but blessed them instead.Later he advised king Balak to entice the Israelites into sin by getting them to have sexual relationships with the Moabite women and then enticing them into idol worship.Balaam also sold his gift of prophesy.

  2. There are also some that hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. This seems to be separate from the Balaam people, but with similar results.

What the church at Pergamum must do:

Repent!  Those who went astray need to get back on track.  Church is not a country club where you go to live like the rest of the world.  One time, I was talking to someone pretty high up in the denomination I was going to.  He said to me, “You can sin in this denomination.  Just don’t get a divorce.”  Well, his son went into the ministry, and he must have taken his dad’s advice.  He had a wife and 5 children.  He also had an affair with a 16 year old girl in the church.  This was the age of consent in that state, so he didn’t go to jail, but it ruined the church.  I would liken this man’s dad like the prophet Balaam.  When I first heard of this happening, I thought, “Like Father, like son.  You can tell who’s child he is.

We shouldn’t even think about straying, or what we can get away with.  For, “he chose us in him (that is Jesus Christ) to be holy and blameless before him (that is, God our Father) (Ephesians 1:4).  That is the whole purpose of salvation.  To become closer to God, and further from sin.  “In love, he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.” (Ephesians 1:5)  We should always behave as children of God, not children of the devil.  People should see our behavior and say, “Oh, I know whose children those are.  Those are God’s children!”  Is it any wonder that Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God?”  Doing things that cause disputing, dissension, division, or deviation are obvious giveaways that you aren’t acting like God wants his children to act.  What do you think when you go to Walmart and you see someone with children and the children are fighting each other all the time.  I’ll tell you what I think.  I think that the parent doesn’t teach them how to respect others.  This is fundamental.  This can start at a very early age.  One time, I was at such a store, and going to my car.  One lady just arrived, and she got out of the car with 2 children.  The first thing she did was say to the children, “Put your hands on the car!”  The children quickly put their hands on the car spread eagle style.  The mom got some things out of the trunk while they waited quietly with their hands on the car.  “Now hold hands!” The mom demanded.  I knew exactly where that mom was coming from.  She didn’t want her children running all over the parking lot where they might run in front of a car and get hurt.  God disciplines us in the same way, so life will go well with us.  The word for disciple in the New Testament is “MATHAETAES” which was used to describe someone that was learning an art, craft, or way of life.

How do you tell who is a child of God, and who isn’t?

“By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.” (1 John 3:10)

So, this is what the church at Pergamum must do – turn around.  Turn around those that are not living like children of God.  And if they cannot turn them around, then they need to put them out.

Warning for the church of Pergamum:

If they don’t repent, Jesus will come to them and war with them with the sword of his mouth.  This is how Jesus relates to them at the start of their letter – “him who has the sharp two-edged sword.”

So Jesus relates to them as a matter of judgment.

If they do repent, there are rewards.

  1. Notice that the reward is for the one who is victorious. This church needed to be victorious over sin. Each Christian must also always be striving to be victorious over sin.We should be taking Jesus with us when we go through these struggles. He’s got the power, and he can help us to victory.

  2. Jesus will give them some of the hidden manna. This refers to a couple other passages: Exodus 16:33-34 and Hebrews 9:4.When God fed the Israelites with manna when they were wandering in the desert, he had Moses put some of it in a jar and keep it in the Holy of Holies.Only the High Priest could go in there once a year. It was there to remind the High Priest of God’s supernatural provision. It is also there in this rarely visited place to remind them of how special God’s love for them is.This is the hidden manna. It is only for special occasions.Jesus is saying to the one who conquers, he is giving this special reward. It is not something to be taken lightly. The rest of it has to be preserved so it can still be the reminder for everyone that enters.

  3. Jesus will give a white stone with a new name on it that only the one who receives it knows. There is a significance to the white stone. Some will say that white symbolizes purity, but because it is a white STONE, I think there is something additional to that that comes from Greek culture. When Greeks voted for their officials, they would vote by putting stones in a jar.A white stone was a “Yes” vote and a black stone was a “No” vote. So, by using a white stone, Jesus is voting “YES” for the one that overcomes. It is like a big thumbs up.Now Jesus will write a new name for the recipient.Only Jesus and the recipient will know this new name. Now, when I was into gaming a lot, I was a Guild Master for a while.People in the guild liked me to be the Guild Master a lot because I had this special ability. My character also was very powerful. It was an archer that had and additional 20 skill points over the top in archery.I had also obtained a very powerful bow that dropped from a high level monster I defeated one day.It went very fast and it had a random area lightning spell AND I could also additionally kick off the area lightning spell intentionally. The guildies (that’s a term for lower level players in your guild) would always ask me to take them hunting because of my powerful bow and how I could use that to help them defeat the big monsters. Now, one of the duties of being Guild Master was giving titles for their characters that would appear below their name.I was able to create interesting titles that related to their character. Often times, only myself and the other guild member knew the complete significance of the title I would give them. That was because it would allude to some victory in a dungeon somewhere that he had when he went hunting with me.It said something about his victory and about our relationship. It might be something like, “Supreme Spider Masher.”This is what Jesus is doing here.He will have a special relationship with everyone that conquers, and everyone will have a special victory. Now think about that when we get to heaven. Each individual will get special attention from Jesus and have his own special relationship with him.

Now for the church at Thyatira:

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Good things about the church at Thyatira:

  1. Good deeds.

  2. Much Love.

  3. Great Faith.

  4. Good Service.

  5. Doing more than at first.

Bad marks about Thyatira:

They tolerate that Jezebel woman that calls herself a prophet, leading people into sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols. Jezebel is probably not her real name, but she is called by this name because she is similar to the Jezebel of the Old Testament.  She calls herself a prophet, which she was not.  Some called her teachings “The Deep Things of Satan.”  It may be that she called them this or just that others called it that , or that they are called that only in this letter.  It is possible that she called her teachings “The Dark Things,” and John adds to that, “of Satan.”  She taught sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.  The Jezebel of the Old Testament led Israelites into idolatry.  This Jezebel led believers into idol worship AND sexual immorality.

The Jezebel of the Old Testament was the daughter of a Phoenician king.  She used her relationships to bring Israel first into economic alliances with the Phoenicians.  The pagan commerce groups were guilds that centered around specific idol worship.  Once that was established, she probably brought them to idol sacrifices which were a part of the commerce guilds.  Some of the idol sacrifices might seem very innocent at first like throwing a cake with candles on it to an idol symbolizing light, then eating the cake.  Later on, there would be rituals involving sexual immorality.  It would have been a step by step process.

Isn’t this the same way that the world gets people into sin today?  It happens step by step.  The world gets your eyes off of Jesus, and then you drift further and further away.  The Jezebel of Thyatira probably led people astray in the same way.  This letter to Thyatira mentions “those who commit adultery with her.”  So, this woman apparently had a significant number of people that committed adultery with her.

Sins like this are creeping into the church today.  Many churches have fallen apart because leaders fall into sexual sins.  Some leaders have blatantly called their sexual sins a good thing.  Remember David Koresh, or Warren Jeffs.  Warren Jeffs was a self-proclaimed prophet.  David Koresh was a self-proclaimed prophet.  This is the kind of woman this Jezebel was.

These self-proclaimed prophets will proclaim some sort of “new truth.”  If you encounter such a person that says they are a prophet and have some sort of “new truth,” you can be certain that person is a false prophet.  Jesus is alive and that always makes Jesus the last prophet.  There are people that have the gift of prophecy, but Jesus holds the office of prophet and there is no need for anyone else to hold that office.  Jesus has given us all the truth about God and all the truth about how we should live.  Jesus sealed his revelation at the end of the Book of Revelation.  People that have the gift of prophecy by the Holy Spirit have no new spiritual truths to give.  They may have specific prophecies to say to people to show that God is at work in their lives or in the world, but there are no new

Revelations to be given by a person with the gift of prophecy.

Now, I mentioned that immorality creeps into the life of someone in small steps.  The world is destabilizing morality in our country in small steps.  Institutions are attacking the foundations of God’s creation.  There have been many efforts through government agencies to promote homosexuality as a normal and safe orientation that should be encouraged.  (https://www.acpeds.org/the-college-speaks/position-statements/parenting-issues/on-the-promotion-of-homosexuality-in-the-schools)  Not just accepted, but encouraged.

“On May 19, 2009, a few short months after his inauguration, Obama gave the green light to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to appoint Kevin Jennings to a top position to influence school policy: the post of Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools, also known as the “safe schools czar.” Jennings, a powerful LGBT rights activist who is himself a gay man, was the founder of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). GLSEN is one of the largest LGBT activist organizations in the nation and is devoted to promoting homosexuality in K-12 schools. Jennings served as “safe schools czar” from 2009-2011.

Given his connection with the organization, we should not be shocked to discover that GLSEN received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control in 2011 for $1.425 million over five years to promote the LGBT agenda in public schools at taxpayers’ expense. Through these publicly funded in-school programs, kids are being bombarded with the message that same-sex attraction and gender-identity confusion are innate and therefore not changeable.” (http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2015/06/15118/)

Groups promoting that same-sex relationships are normal will allude to studies that claim that there is a genetic or chemical link to a person being homosexual.  Investigation of these studies finds that they looked for such a link by recruiting homosexual people that had an identical twin that was gay to do the study.  Even with that slant on the study, there was only a slight tendency for both twins to be homosexual.  Studies that simply studied identical twins from the general population found there was no genetic tendency.  Another claim is that chemicals such as estrogen mimickers are making people homosexual.  Although chemicals have an effect, there is no proof that there is a direct correlation that these chemicals are making people homosexual.  If it were true, then every twin that was homosexual, would have a homosexual twin as well.  Not only that, but the incidence of homosexual activity in the human population was much higher 2,000 years ago than it is now.

The American College of Pediatricians disagrees with this and presents this scientific response:

  • The etiology of homosexual attraction is determined by a combination of familial, environmental, and social influences. For some individuals the inheritance of predisposing personality traits may also play a role.

  • While homosexual attraction may not be a conscious choice, it is changeable for many individuals.

  • Declaring and validating a student’s same-sex attraction during the adolescent years is premature and may be harmful.

  • Many youth with homosexual attractions have experienced a troubled upbringing, including sexual abuse, and are in need of therapy.

  • The homosexual lifestyle carries grave health risks.

  • Sexual reorientation therapy can be effective. Students and parents should be aware of all therapeutic options.

  • There is no evidence that pro-homosexual programs, such as on-campus student clubs, ease the health disorders of homosexual youth.

Media outlets promote licentious lifestyles.  Google “sex and relationships” and you’ll get articles like: “How to Maintain Sexual Relationships With Nine People Simultaneously,” or “How To Get Over Your Spouse Having An Affair And Continue The Marriage,” or “Why You Should Have Affairs,” or “Best Positions.”

The world in first century Christianity was not much different.  Licentious lifestyles were promoted then too.  So, we can find some tools that the apostles presented to the first century Christians and use those today.

We can’t just take ourselves out of the world.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11,

“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people — not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.  But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler — not even to eat with such a one.”

There may be a student who has lost the strength to swim against the sexual immorality of many on that university campus. So he or she has given in. The best way to defend one’s actions is to repudiate the validity of biblical authority and the very Christian faith that calls to a higher moral standard.

Perhaps there is a single person who wants to date, but very few of the people he or she meets are found to be suitable for a match. So that person is just about ready to throw in the towel, or perhaps they’ve already done it.

First: Acknowledge immorality for what it is.

Compare what is going on with what the Bible teaches.  Find what God’s plan is for every believer in the Bible.  Seek God’s plan.  Genesis 2:24, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”  Relish the idea of God’s plan.

Second: Don’t allow yourself to become indifferent to immorality.

Grieve when you see it.

Our hearts should break when we see sexual sin in the life of another or ourselves. We should go into mourning. We should wear the black armband, not on top of our clothing as a gossip item, but around our very heart, grieving wherein we or a brother or sister in Christ has fallen into sin. My heart breaks every time I hear of someone in ministry who gets tripped up in this area.  There was one pastor who had an affair with the church’s pianist.  He blamed it on the woman’s beautiful makeup.  Not only did he lose his position, but attendance in that church went down by 90% and the women that remained stop wearing any makeup at all.  Just because you aren’t a church pastor, don’t think that there won’t be a similar effect if you fall into a similar sin.

Sexual immorality can also devastate a marriage, children of the marriage, and devastate someone for future relationships.

Third: Have the courage to discipline.

The prescription is clear. Demand repentance. Remove one caught in sexual immorality. This is not optional. It is essential. Discipline is never for the satisfaction of the person exercising it. Discipline is always designed for the mending of the sinner.  Each Christian has the obligation to confront someone who is sinning and try to bring them to repentance.  It is so much easier to deal with a situation before it becomes public.

Fourth: Remember, one bad apple can spoil the whole crate.

You gotta toss out the bad apples.  There is no other way.  It is critical for the health of the whole congregation.

Fifth: This does not mean that we as Christians are to disassociate ourselves from immoral pagan persons.

This is extremely important. The church is an island in a sea of moral pollution. We have a responsibility to hold each other accountable in Christian discipline. However, we are not called to be the judges or the policemen of the pagan world.  We should want that sinners come to our meetings to hear the Word of God so that they would be saved.  We should also expect that those that do believe in Jesus Christ will learn to live in God’s way.

Sixth: Bring Jesus with you!

Just like my guildies would come and get me when they had to face a big monster so I could help them with my special bow, you can get Jesus there to help you with the big problems in life.  Better yet, realize that Jesus is always right there with you!

Seventh: Realize that Jesus means business.

Notice what he says will happen to this Jezebel woman.

“I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.  So I will cast her on a bed of suffering,”

And notice what will happen to those that sinned with her:

“and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.”

And there is more – Jesus says,

“I will strike her children dead.”

Jesus relates to this church in two ways:

  1. “the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire”

    • This is because he can see through everything.Jesus can see what these people are doing.

    • In verse 23, he says, “I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.”

    • It is likely that some people were following this woman secretly because others in the church had not learned of her ways. But Jesus saw what they were doing.Jesus will not tolerate such things in his church.

  2. “whose feet are like burnished bronze”

    • Now the Romans were well armed.First they would put on a helmet because if you got hit on the head, you were immediately down for the count. Then they would put on a breastplate because if you got a puncture wound in the abdomen, you could be out in a dew minutes. Then they would carry a tower shield that was 3-4 feet tall.Hopefully, the shield would deflect most attacks. Then they would wear a chainmail skirt.Wounds in the groin area could really hurt. Then they would wear shin guards or greaves to protect the legs.A leg wound would slow you down.Last of all, if they were really well armored, they would wear bronze foot armor. The bronze foot armor was attached to thick sandals that had spikes on the soles. Each soldier would be typically armed with the following weapons:

      • The Gladius, which was a sharp double edged sword. This would be used in a forward, underhanded stabbing motion repeatedly to try to make a would anywhere.

      • The Pilum, which was a javelin that was solid iron in the front half. This would be the first thing they threw at the advancing enemy. It would shatter their shield and often go right through the shield to kill the enemy.

      • The Hasta, which was a short spear about 6 ½ feet long. This would be used to poke at the enemy inbetween the clashing shields of both sides.

      • Now which piece of equipment, do you think the Romans killed most of their enemies with???

      • It was the bronze feet armor. Here’s why: The romans would configure their front lines in a saw-tooth pattern. The enemy coming straight on would be squeezed into the V-shaped grooves of the formation where they simply could no longer hold their shields or weapons. They would simply fall down and the Roman army would trample them to death.

      • So, the bronze feet mean certain victory.

    • The Bronze feet are given because some in that church will be victorious.

    • To them Jesus says, “Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.”

Eighth: Remember that the time is near!  We are only going to live a few a few dozen years, and then we are going to be in heaven.

Jesus said in Luke 18:29-30, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Billy Graham departed to be with the Lord at the age of 99.  Just before he died he said, “Life is short.”

There is a reward for those who are victorious in this church.

“To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father.  I will also give that one the morning star.”

So, be victorious!  Take Jesus with you wherever you go!
